Below is a list of everything I bought while backing packing in Southeast Asia for 3 months (Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand).

It will show you how to budget, average prices, and where money can be saved.

Figure out how to set a backpacking budget here.

Wait a second... why is this girl going completely TMI and listing every thing she has bought since 10/11/16? Why is she admitting she sometimes eats ice cream and milkshakes in the same day? Click here to read my post explaining my Southeast Asia backpacking budget project.

The daily budget is $40.  Read how I figured that out here.

Total trip budget: $3100

Total spent while backpacking in Southeast Asia for 77 days: $3,037.61

So, how did I do it?  What did I spend my money on?  Where could I have cut corners?

Use the "find" feature on your browser to type in a specific city, and see what the expenses were there...

Note on 10/21 - If you are wondering when bad and expensive things are going to happen, the answer is right after you spend $200 on custom clothing and milkshakes (which, purchasing in tandem, is already a bad idea).  This is not the place to go into detail, but I had to visit the Danang hospital today.   The ironic thing is that the water I bought in my hostel this morning cost more than the actual hospital experience.
BUDGET: $40
SPENT:
$10 - Hostel in Hoi An
$2.06 - Water
$32.27 - Car to hospital (ouch.... that hurts to look at)
$0.49 - Hospital examination (Nope, no joke.  My hospital examination cost LESS than fifty cents)
$6.72 - Medication (again, crazy)
At this point ^ in the day it is 1:48pm and you may have noticed I have purchased no food, no coffee (absolute need for me), and worst of all, I don't even have enough money for a drink, which I DESERVE.

Randomly, at around 4pm, the guy who works at my hostel mumbled something and handed me 120k dong, aka $5.38 USD for some unknown reason.  I literally think they gave me money because they felt bad that I went to the hospital.  I am not above taking it without questioning  further, so I have $5.38 left in spare money for the day!

$1.79 - Water
$1.25 - First dinner (sandwich at Anthony Bourdain's fav place)
$1.12 - Second dinner (typical soup of the region.. it wasn't very good)
$0.67 - Kit kat bar (give me this, please)
$2.24 - Gin and tonic (and this... this was only after my hostel gave me two free beers so if you factor that it.. this is cheaper?)
TOTAL SPENT: $58.81
Subtract the random $5.58 I got

I have a lot of Vietnamese currency leftover that I need to spend, and probably will need to ball out in the next few days.  As you can see above ^^^, going over budget isn't the end of the world! I can get through this.  Also... I would save so much money if I wasn't addicted to caffeine, just saying.

So! Here is the situation.  I came to SE Asia with 3 different credit cards and emergency cash.  On December 1st my last card got sucked into a machine, and my emergency cash had been spent in Cambodia.  I had $30 in my wallet, and banks were closed for 3 days because of Laos National Day and the weekend.

What ensued over the next few days was dramatic and stressful.  For the record, asking strangers for money is a truly humbling experience.  Many thanks to my parents, friends, and the kindness of strangers for getting me to Luang Prabang's Western Union where I finally obtained money of my own.

A large lesson was learned in this.  I am currently writing a blog post on what I learned, how you can prevent this situation, and how you can get money within minuets if (God forbid) this happens to you.

Considering there was a point where I had just $2 in my wallet, I wasn't exactly keeping track of my spending.  However, I calculated that between 12/1 and 12/5:

BUDGET: $200
TOTAL SPENT: $164.00
The remaining $36 will go towards paying off my ride to Konglor and then my dress.
TOTAL CHARGED: $200
leftover money running total: $16.20

to be paid off:
dress deficit spending: -$90.16

So losing all my money actually saved me money... always a silver lining, folks.

LE FIN.

Just like that, the trip is somehow done.

My budget for 78 days in Southeast Asia was $3,100.  By cutting my daily budget down to $30 per day for the final weeks, I was able to finish the trip having spent only $3009.66, which is $90.34 under budget

I will apply this "leftover money" to my deficit spending, alleviating the train to Bangkok and leaving only $27.77 on the dress.  Considering this dress is for a wedding completely unrelated to my trip, and I would have had to purchase a dress when I got home anyways, I still consider myself under budget for the trip. The fact I paid off any portion of my dress with trip money is hilarious.

Overall, $3,100 for 77 days in Southeast Asia was more than enough. I spent frivolous money on gifts and milkshakes.  If you are the type of person who can get by without chocolate or beer, you could easily do this trip on $2,500.  However, the cushion of $3,100 was nice, and you'll probably want a beer more often than you realize.

Things not included: the Western Union Transfer fees.  I did not include these, but I gave Wester Union around $36 of my own, personal dollars as wire transfer fees when I lost all of my cards.  I could have afforded this in my budget, but I would have paid off less of the dress... I just didn't know where to put it because I didn't notice until later.
