Franktuary. Yes. Another staple in my Pittsburgh food repertoire.
If there is something I can get behind, it is fancy hot dogs. When I was a vegetarian for a year (lol), the only meat I truly craved the entire time was a hot dog.... and I am not even sure hot dogs are really meat.
Franktuary takes their dogs to a new level. You start by choosing your meat: standard, grass-fed, vegan, corndog.
Then you choose your toppings. Franktuary obviously has your standards - sauerkraut, mustard, relish, ect., but it does not stop there - you can get a "Pittsburgh" dog with pierogis, "Bankok" dog with peanut sauce, "Oahu" with bacon and pinapple, and plenty more!
I have been going to Franktuary since 2013, and similar to Dinette, it holds up every time.
Prep your stomach pre-arrival, because before you get your dog, you have to get some of their poutine. If you (somehow) don't know what poutine is, let me change you life real quick - Poutine is the Canadian speciality of french fries with gravy and cheese curds.
Franktuary does classic poutine right, but because they are Franktuary, they also have four additional unique variations, like the "Italienne" with marinara and sausage, or the "Baked Potato" with sour cream and bacon.
If you are slightly intimidated, it is okay. It took a lifetime to eat the way I do. Their Miso Kale Salad and 'Beetball' Sandwich are amazing as well.
Lastly, as we all know - no meal is complete without the booze. Franktuary does not skimp here either, thank god. They have the standard cocktails, wine, bottled beer, but also over a dozen rotating beers and ciders on tap - there is something new to try every time you stop through.
I am not naive - putting fancy toppings on a hotdog is not groundbreaking stuff. However, Franktuary does it right, and moreover, they do it right every time. I never have to worry if I am going to get a good meal - I know I will. I prefer Franktuary's dog over the similar but more casual fare at D's Six Pax and Dogz in Regent Square (though D's is great and has an amazing beer selection).
